Cagliari 3-2 Juventus

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

The match of the weekend thus far featured a surging Cagliari side brush of second place side Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico.

Winning four of their last five and going six straight without a defeat, Cagliari was more than up to the task of seeing a Turin side off who are now two matches without a point and six behind leaders Inter.

While the opening minutes were filled with a number of chances for both sides, it was the eventual victors who drew first blood.  It was Davide Biondi who was able to finish off a superb cross and allow for the Red clad visitors to take the lead.

Nearly going 2-0 down, Juve finally found an equalizer through a Del Piero cross that found Sissoko minutes later.  They then took the lead in the 38th through a Nedved shot and taking a 2-1 scoreline to the second period of play.

The Rossoblu were able to make the most of their second half disadvantage, as they were able to catch the Juve back line napping, equalizing the scoreline through Jeda.

Making for a very silent second half due to the visitor’s desire to hold for a draw, only a single Juve chance made for any excitment.  However at the 79th minute mark, the lead changed hands for the final time as Alessandro Matri was able to fire past Buffon for the 3-2.

Juve will travel to Catania next Sunday, while Cagliari will host Atalanta.

Real Madrid 2-0 Numancia

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

In one of the only two matches of the day in La Liga, second place Real Madrid saw off 17th place Numancia.

Having Raul. Robben and Higuain starting as the tip of a 4-3-3, Madrid made their chances count, however if only after a dull opening period.  Numanica, who started with   typical 4-4-2, got the first major chance of the match, though Casillas was more than able.

Entering the break on even terms, Madrid would be keen to start off on good terms.  It only took two minutes after the restart to break the deadlock, as Raul was able to slot home an easy shot prepared for his two strike partners.

It was just eight minutes later and Robben had the matches second, while passing brilliantly with Raul and maneuvering past a number of Numancia defenders.

While finishing 2-0 in favor of the whites, Madrid kept their second place standing, only nine behind a surging Barcelona.

Madrid face Racing Santander next Sunday, while Numancia travel to Villarreal.

BREAKING: Jozy Altidore set for loan move to Deportivo Xerez

Friday, January 30th, 2009

ESPN is reporting that Jozy Altidore is set to join Spanish second division side Deportivo Xerez on a loan. Originally, Altidore was the subject of a proposed transfer to Xerez but the idea was nixed both by Altidore and Villarreal manager, Manuel Pellegrini.

The general manager of the Yellow Submarines said to Spanish Daily AS on Friday regarding a possible transfer move, “In the beginning it appeared very advanced but ultimately it looks as though neither the head coach or the player were interested in making this change.”

Xerez is hoping for a promotion to La Liga next year as they currently sit in first place in the Spanish second division.

Tuesday Night Titans - Her Majesty’s Secret Service: “Dial Double O-Zero”

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

MercySoccer 016 by WCWFC.

One of the most memorable comments that I have heard during the 2008-2009 WCWFC winter session was from Friday night regular Kyle Mc Tigue. In an earlier post, he mentioned, “I realize how much fun it is to be a soccer player again, thanks to WCWFC.” These words rang true this past Tuesday at the Rauner Family YMCA as the Tuesday Night Titans met for another great tournament.

Slowly we are all getting the hang of things on Tuesdays. To all players, there is a parking lot behind the facility! As you enter you will notice that there is a service drive that goes around the facility. Follow the service drive and you will find another large parking area. Enough logistics, let’s talk football. The tournament would evolve into a series of well played matches between each of the four teams.

The first match of the evening was between Team Orange and Team Red. Team Orange is an off-shoot of Friday nights Limey Orange Sherbert that lately has had a bit more success on Tuesday than their partners on Friday. Team Red took the field with an intimidating combination of ex-pats from the U.K that resembled the reserve squad from Liverpool. Team Orange was mixture of new players along with WCWFC regulars Aaron Kanfer and Neil V. Cruz.

Throughout the evening, Orange took advantage of second chances, rebounds and miscues by defenders and goalkeepers. The formula was simple, fluid passing, constant communication and consistently seeking the open player. After a well played opening match, Team Orange took the win by a score of 2-1.

Game two pitted Team Green against last week’s tournament champions Team Skins. The same Skins who last week did away with the “Green Street Hooligans” in the final round. Anchored once again by regulars Tony Rodriguez, Daniel De Gyves, Kohtaro Ooka, and Juanito Villarroel, the Skins opened competition with a 3-1 win. Green featured Shannon Rosine, Dan Booker and defensive standout Raul Campos.

The first surprise of the evening came from Team Orange in their first round match up against Skins. The Skins followed their traditional formula, a good clearance from the defense to Villarroel in the midfield. Villarroel then finds De Gyves who slices through his defender to have a shot on goal. Add to that combination, last minute transfer from Team Olympiakos; Hilel Ehrman whose blistering right foot finds ways to score from anywhere on the field.

Leading 2-1 with two minutes remaining, Orange was able to equalize after a goal from Amer Aldeen who sneaked a shot pass goalkeeper Rafhael Moreno. In what seemed to be evolving into a draw, Orange did the improbable scoring with thirty seconds remaining to seal the game for Orange by a score of 3-2.

Things continued moving in a Clockwork Orange, as after trailing by a score of 1-0 to the Greens, Orange scored two goals to end the tournament undefeated by a score of 2-1. This score set up a final showdown between Skins and Orange to determine who would be the Tuesday Night Titan…

Before that third place glory would be contested between Team Green and the Redcoats of Team Red… Team Red was by no means a scrappy League Two squad the likes of Shrewsbury Town or Grimsby Town. They were more like …….if you English football fans may indulge me, like Leeds United when it began its fall from premiership glory… Flashes of brilliance but lapses in their defense led to a Green victory of 4-1… As Red began the immediate process of firing its coach and seeking the monetary assistance of the Abu Dhabi Emirates, a championship final needed to be played.

Any time you play against Juanito “The Andean Giant” Villaroel and Daniel Messi De Gyves you are most likely going to give up some goals. This combination can score. It truly can be the irresistible force and the immovable object when they are clicking. Add the steady play of Tony Rodriguez, the reliable Christopher Booker, newcomer Manny Blanco and the goalkeeping abilities of Rafhael Moreno and the Skins seemed to have it all.

The game evolved into a defensive struggle for the first ten minutes with neither team having many chances on goal. Juanito’s shots sailed harmlessly over the net and Messi De Gyves was frustrated by the staunch defense of Aaron Kanfer and Fred DeBruyn Rubio. Aided by the defensive stalwart Pasha, Orange contained the scoring for most of the game. Orange scoring threats were delivered by Ameer, David “St. Pauli” Hilkes and the rest of the squad.

The clearest scoring chance came from the Skins who due to a defensive miscue deflected a ball away from goalkeeper Neil Cruz and left it at the feet of Hugo Navas. Navas’ shot bounced off the legs of the goalkeeper and back into play. Rafhael Moreno commented to his teammate, “dude you had time to make a sandwich, sit, eat and make me a sandwich too.. Arggghhhh” (direct quote)

As coordinator Matt Rosine, counted down one minute, the pace intensified. Juanito Villarroel broke free from his defender and tried to blast a shot in from the corner but was denied by the keeper.. Orange took desperation long range shot that flew harmlessly away from Moreno’s net… As the whistle blew, we had a first. Team Orange 0- Team Skins 0… A scoreless draw…

Congratulations to everyone that participated in this memorable match, unfortunately due to time constraints a winner could not be determined, but it still does not take away from the incredible effort and a memorable game…

The Titans will clash again next week at the YMCA for what should be another great night of football. In the meantime Matt Rosine will review the validity of Team Reds transfer request for Liverpool striker Steven Gerrard to bolster their ranks for the next game. Will Rosine invoke his WCWFC morality clause and not allow any thugs from the city of Liverpool join the ranks??? Have a good week everyone and see you at the Y next week…

Wembley Set to Host 2011 Champions League Final

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

It was announced today that UEFA has chosen Wembley Stadium to host the 2011 Champions League final ahead of two German cities, being Berlin and Munich.

Though the decision wasn’t entirely surprising, many had speculated that the UK would be granted the rights to the match in order to push through a tax exemption law on the players who were to be featured in the match.

It was also announced that the newly christened “Europa League” (formerly the UEFA Cup) will see its 2011 final played in Landsdowne Road in Dublin, while the 2012 Champions League final will indeed be played in Munich.

Around the Continent in 60 Seconds

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Its not quite midweek and already there have a number of fascinating stories from around Europe.  So, kick back, grab a coffee- or tea- and find out what’s all the buzz on the opposite side of the Atlantic.

Huub Stevens Quits-PSV Eindhoven will have to find a new manager as Huub Stevens has announced his resignation citing internal issues between himself and his players.  Having been back in his native Holland for less that a year, Stevens left German side Hamburger SV to travel back home so that he could be with his ailing wife.

Currently PSV are 15 points back from the top spot and have been knocked out of the Champions League.

Robinho Fined then Arrested- British media is suggesting that Robinho’s rift with Manchester City, while civil, has lead to a fine of a yet to be announced amount.  The Brazilian, who moved on hopes of a larger paycheck from Real Madrid in the summer, left a training session to travel back to Brazil due to a family emergency.

Interestingly enough, the forward has also been arrested and quizzed by Manchester police when an 18 year old woman accused the new Blues player of a sexual assault.  DNA samples were taken from Robinho, however little else has been announced.

Mourinho to Watch from Stands- Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho will be forced to watch today’s match between his Nerazzuri and Catania from, of all places, the press box.  Apparently having had a spat between Catania directors and staff earlier in the season, he is now being forced to watch the match from the stands.  Club officials cite a “lack of respect” as to why the Portuguese manager will not be given access to typical VIP seats.

Man. U 5-0 West Brom- Injury ridden Manchester United destroyed West Bromwich Albion last night in a mid week EPL match.  Having started the match 30 minutes late due to traffic issues, the match began with both sides having a share of the chances, however Berbatov made quick work of a United throw in, putting the Reds 1-0 up.

United went 2 up before the break shortly after West Brom defender Paul Robinson was sent off.  Finishing up the scoring for United were Nemajan Vidic, Ronbaldo (with two).  Currently United are the table toppers with 50 points, while West Brom are 18th on 21.

Bayern Smash Stuttgart in Donovan’s Official Debut

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

FC Bayern München cruised to an easy 5-1 win against VfB Stuttgart to earn themselves a spot in the German Cup quarter finals on Tuesday.

Having been held to second place at the end of the autumn half of the season, Bayern were keen to prove their critics wrong and begin 2009 on a winning note.

In front of a packed Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Frank Ribery opened the scoring in the 14′ and 16′ minutes respectively.  As the 1st half began to come to a close, Bayern moved 3 goals up as Luca Toni was able to hit a third over the left shoulder of former Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann.

Trying to move forward with their first half momentum, Bayern soon added a 4th and 5th through another Schweinsteiger strike, this coming from the spot in the 55′ and a Ze Roberto hit four minutes later.

It wasn’t however until the 66′ that American international Landon was able to make his first official debut, subbing in for Toni.  Donovan, on loan to Bayern until the MLS season begins, scored two goals in Bayern’s warm up to the new season in Dubai.

Unfortunately for the forward, Lehmann was more than up to his two challenges late in the second half, as the lime green clad keeper easily parried his attempts wide.

Bayern will now face Hamburg on Friday to start the season’s 2nd half.
