Africa’s Best: Adebayor

The CAF (Confédération Africaine de Football) has named their 2008 footballer of the year and beating out the likes of Mohamed Aboutrika of Egypt and Ghana’s Michael Essien is Togo international and Arsenal star Emmanuel Adebayor.

Taking home the crystal trophy, the striker will also be awarded a hefty $20,000 cash prize.  Having never won the prestigeious award, Adebayor is the first Togolese player to do so.

The voting had been undertaken by CAF member states and their staff.  Adebayor was set apart from the rest of the candidates for his play in the absence of Thierry Henry and his exploits for the national side which helped lead them to a strong 2008 after having earned their first ever World Cup birth in 2006.

Other noteable winners were Egyptian giants Al Ahly who were anmed CAF club of the year and Salomon Kalou, winning young player of the year.
